Charles Sammut

Charles Sammut was born on 14 July, 1968 And grew up at Birkirkara and now lives at Mellieħa. He is an Actor.

Charles Sammut graduated in Theatre Studies from the University of Malta and then with an MA in Theatre Literature, Theory and Criticism from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada.

Presently he has been accepted to start his PhD studies at the University of Kent in Canterbury, UK. Charles also trained as an actor at the Manoel Theatre Academy of Dramatic Arts (MTADA}. After graduating from MTADA, he has been constantly active on the local theatre scene both as an actor and director for the past thirty-two years. Charles took on several main and secondary roles in different theatre productions both locally and abroad.

Some of his memorable performances include Blood Wedding, Ħitan, Cosi,Twelfth Night, King Lear, Dr. Fuastus, Don Quixote, The Master and the Margerita, Iż-Żjara,Id-Djarju ta’ Sara, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Dead Man Walking, and Antigone, among many others.

In his years of experience as a stage actor, Charles has worked with several renowned Maltese directors including Carmel S. Aquilina, Josette Ciappara,Joe Friggieri, Albert Marshall and Salvu Mallia. Charles is also a founding member and actor of the group KAST with whom he has acted and written scripts for productions including It-Tfal Jiġu Bil-Vapuri, Inbid ta’ Kuljum, Siegħet Sansun, Pupu Fil-Baħar, and Xagħret Mewwija. He has also directed theatre productions like Arloġġ għal Benjamin, The Wall, The Marriage of Figaro and L-Għalliema.

Charles also spent a number of years as a drama teacher in several local theatre schools where he also coached many students to successfully sit for drama exams set by foreign theatre institutions. Moreover, he has also acted in and directed theatre students in numerous foreign theatre festivals and exchanges in Germany, France, Austria, and Sicily among others. He has also participated both as presenter and actor in several local and foreign TV productions including Għada Jisbaħ Ukoll, Delitti F’Malta, Salib It-Toroq, Anġli, Xhud, Iċ-Ċaqqufa and a small speaking part in the renowned film, Agora.

Recently, Charles was the recipient of a scholarship in the teaching of Shakespearean text at the Globe Theatre kindly offered by the English Speaking Union. His latest play was Jien Inħobb, Inti Tħobb performed in February 2014 and to be put up again in May 2014 by public demand.
