Mro. Carmelo Abela Farrugia

Although little is known about Maestro Carmelo Abela Farrugia, he was one of the finest musicians of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Mro Abela Farrugia was famous for the composition of arrangements of Opera Selections to be played by the band clubs. Throughout his career, As established bandmaster he helped Luiġi Carabott in the formation of the Società Filarmonica Nazionale La Valette. Abela Farrugia was also himself an accomplished band master, having led a number of bands such as the La Vincitrice Band Club of Senglea, Soċjeta Filarmonika San Ġorġ Bormla, Vilhena Band Club of Floriana, Għaqda Mużikali Sant' Andrija Ħal-Luqa Melita Band of In-Naxxar and the Duke of Edinburgh il-Birgu.

In July 1894, he was handed the baton of the Għaqda Mużikali San Ġorg Martri.

Qormi. Under his direction, this nascent band registered remarkable progress. He conducted the band on a number of national events. Notably of mention is the concert on the occasion of the feast of the Otto Settembre 1896, where for the first time Valletta was lit by electrical illumination.

Another confirmation of his influence in the musical sphere is the fact that the Soċieta Filarmonica Nazionale La Valette committee had consulted Mro Abela Farrugia when there was the need of appointed a new Maestro, and most probably, Mro Vincenzo Carabott was appointed conductor of this band in 1889 on his consultancy. He led the St George Band in its performance abroad (Reggio Calabria 1895). Mro Abela Farrugia, besides an excellent bandmaster was also a composer. His musical works include the waltzes Carolina and Sea Roa, the gavotte Stefanie and the Inno Filarmonica San Giorgio.
