Fredu Spiteri l-Lavarist
was a noted folksinger. Born on the 29th April 1930 in Rabat, Gozo, he is the most celebrated folksinger to have come out from the sister island in modern times. Known also as Tal-Pitrolju, since he was originally a paraffin vendor, Spiteri was known for his makjetti.
He lost his life tragically in a motorcycle accident in November 1965. There are two known ballads written about him, one sung by Mikiel Abela l-Bambinu and another by Fredu Cassar ta' Bakkar Omxot.
