The name &#039;&#039;Tarxien&#039;&#039; is derived from the word &#039;&#039;tirxa&#039;&#039; which means &#039;&#039;a rock&#039;&#039;. <br /> <br /> This village have been in existance since 4000 years ago and according to archeologists the Neolithic Temples were used as sacred place where the inhabitants worshipped the &#039;&#039;Woman of Fertility&#039;&#039;. Ħal Tarxien is known as the place where excavations of historical sites are carried out.<br /> <br /> The present population has reached about 9000. Till the year 1960 the residents earned their living primarily from agriculture, especially selling goats&#039; milk.
