Patrick Fenech is an established artist and photographer and works mainly from his studio in Senglea, an old fortified city in the Grand Harbour of Malta. He is a visiting lecturer of photography at the Faculty of Art Education and the Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences at the University of Malta. Fenech is also the organizer and founding member of Valletta Photography Festival.

Fenech started to take pictures, which reflected his search for artistic expression, after receiving painting tuition from the Malta School of Arts and his dad . His early photography works, the majority of them in black and white, are mainly based on a social documentary of the Maltese Islands in the early 80s. His enthusiasm for photography was fueled further by the visit of Mr Petr Tausk from the photography department of the Faculty of Arts at University of Prague who saw Fenech’s early works and acquired a few prints for his own collection. Petr Tausk published some important books on 20th century photography and introduced Fenech to Sue Davis at the time director of the Photographers Gallery in London. Fenech soon realized the potential of photography in artistic practice and started to produce works such as the ‘Latent Aggression’ series and ‘Cradles of Elegance’.

In 1984 Fenech was awarded a scholarship by the Istituto Italiano di Cultura to study photography in Italy and during his four year stay, produced a series of works which mainly portrayed time and traces of memory called “Via delle Cento Stelle, 13” series. He was official photographer for ‘Musicus Concertus’ of Florence and photographed various personalities such as Lorin Mazel, Barbara Hendrix and Alirio Diaz. In Milan, the Maltese opera singer Miriam Gauci introduced him to the back stage scene of La Scala.

After completing his studies in Italy, Fenech moved to London for a while where he practised printing at Camberwell School of Art and then back to Malta were he set up his own studio of photography and design servicing clients in the media industry. He then moved on to the publishing industry were he was engaged as art director on several art and cultural publications. His involvement in photography has taken his work around the globe with group and individual exhibitions. He has conducted a series of photography workshops and curated his first photography exhibition ‘Pictures in My Mind’ as part of the EU campaign for the ‘Year of Intercultural Dialogue’. He was invited by the committee of the Malta Arts Festival to curate the visual art exhibition for the Arts Festival in 2009. In 2010 he was awarded top funding by the MCCA to organize and curate the first Photography Festival in Malta.

For the past three decades, Patrick Fenech has used his camera for what has been called absorptive scrutiny. He has simultaneously looked at, around and through his subjects to compose a fascinating and dizzying tapestry of composite and montage photography. Although his work is mainly photography based, Fenech also produces sculpture, video and installations.

His works can be found in state, private and public collections such as the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C., The Amercian Embassy and The French Embassy in Malta, Heritage Malta Fine Arts collection, Malta International Airport, The Farsons Cisk plc collection, MSV Life plc, Citadel Insurance, Atlas Insurance plc and others. A number of his works have been published in contemporary art books and international magazines such as Studio International, Lens Culture, Le Soir and NY ARTS magazine. BBC2 has featured his work in the Richard Ellis Archive in one of their TV programmes.
Christopher Saliba is an artist from Gozo.

He holds degrees in Art from the University of Malta and the Accademia di Belle Arti "Pietro Vannucci" in Perugia. During his four-year scholarship at the Accademia, Saliba participated in important artistic projects; he displayed his grand scale paintings in several collective exhibitions and produced various installations and videos.

His approach to art is quite versatile and painting is just one medium in his repertoire of artistic creations. Sculpture, printmaking, photography, installations and video are also valid means which enable him to express his thoughts and emotions. His work tries to reveal the complex nature of the human being as well as the primordial link between mankind and the natural environment. Being a Gozitan explains his interest in expressing symbolically the spatial and physical limitations of people living in confined spaces.

Christopher Saliba exhibited several times in different countries like Italy, England, France and Malta. Recently, he participated in an international exhibition at the Louvre Museum in Paris. His works are found in numerous art collections in Europe, Japan, Canada and the United States as well as in the permanent collections of important art institutions, namely the Accademia di Belle Arti, “Pietro Vannucci”, in Perugia, the St. James Cavalier Centre for Creativity and the Museum of Fine Arts in Valletta, Malta. Essays and reviews about Christopher Saliba’s work feature in several local and foreign publications, the latest being Cross-Currents: Critical Essays on Art and Culture in Malta.

Mark Sagona(b 1976) is a painter, designer, art historian and lecturer from Gozo.

Sagona was exposed to art from a very young age in the studio of his father Joseph Sagona (b.1942), whom he assisted in various projects of ecclesiastical decoration. Although he started exhibiting his works as early as 1992, the start of his artistic breakthrough came, however, when he moved to Malta as a student at the University of Malta in 1995, establishing close contacts with artist and scholar Joseph Paul Cassar (b.1958). Concurrently he frequented the Malta Government School of Art, Valletta (1996-1998), and the Life Class (1998-1999) under Anthony Calleja (b.1955). It was also in the late 1990’s that he started visiting important art collections in Europe which assisted and informed him in his developing artistic language.

The art of Mark Sagona has featured in several personal and collective exhibitions, both in Malta and Gozo, and abroad. He has organised six personal exhibitions in the Maltese Islands, publishing various exhibition catalogues with studies by leading art critics and scholars. In September 2006, he was selected to represent Malta, together with photographer Joe Smith, in the first edition of the international festival Il Lazio tra Europa e Mediterraneo, held in Rome under the auspices of the Regione Lazio and the President of Italy. Between January and March 2010, one of his abstract works was exhibited at the European Parliament in Brussels.

Sagona has also produced works for theatre and opera and has designed various official posters for cultural and educational initiatives. In 2008, he was also entrusted with the design for a new processional pedestal and predella for the titular statue of the Virgin for the parish church of Fleur-de-Lys in Malta.

In 2007, Mark Sagona was selected for inclusion in the ISIDEM database project of a select number of modern and contemporary Maltese Artists, coordinated by the National Museum of Fine Arts, Valletta (Heritage Malta), the Comune di Scicli and the Universita’ di Catania (Sicily). He also received awards for his abstract works in the 2005 and 2007 editions of the Malta International Art Biennale. Sagona also features in the Dictionary of Maltese Biographies (PIN, Malta 2009).
Mark Sagona is also active in the fields of art-historical academic research, scholarship and education. He holds a First Class B.A.(Hons.) (1999) and M.A. with Distinction (2003) in History of Art from the University of Malta, and has conducted research, published papers and delivered lectures on various aspects of Art. His numerous studies have been published in several art publications, and in Treasures of Malta, The Sunday Times of Malta, and The Gozo Observer, among others. Venues for public lectures include the University of Malta, the Heritage Malta Head Office, Valletta, and the Conference Hall, Ministry for Gozo, Victoria and various churches. His research has thrown new light on a significant number of hitherto unidentified works of art by various important Maltese artists. In 2000 he was appointed a teacher of Art and Design with the Education Department of Malta, and presently lectures at the Sir Michelangelo Refalo Centre for Further Studies, Victoria, Gozo.

Since 2004, he is also a visiting lecturer with the Department of History of Art, Faculty of Arts, University of Malta, where he has served as a dissertation tutor and member of various examination boards. Mark Sagona is also a Ph.D. candidate in History of Art at the University of Malta.

Works by Mark Sagona are scattered in numerous public and private collections in the Maltese Islands and in Australia, Italy, Germany, Norway, Switzerland, Luxembourg, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. Noel Attard (born 15 April 1966) is an artist from Malta.

He started studying art at Savio College. Later he pursued his studies at the Malta Government School of Arts, Valletta, at Targa Gap School of Art and at the University of Malta where he graduated in History of Art in 2006.

From his first participation in a collective output at Bath, England with the Malta Society of Arts, Manufactures, and Commerce, back in 1998, he never looked back and has participated in a considerable number of collective exhibitions both locally and abroad to this present day. In 2003 he held his first solo exhibition at St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity. Always inquisitive in his quest for artistic autonomy and originality in 2007 set up another solo exhibition, this time at the National Blood Transfusion Center, Malta. In 2009 he held his last solo exhibition to date, this time at the Loggia, National Fine Arts Museum, Valletta. Together with four other renowned contemporary artists on the island, in 2007, he was asked to embellish the State Council Hall at the Presidential San Anton Palace.

Noel's art is a tribute to life in general and often shows the emotional state the artist is in when depicting a particular piece of work. His works forms an essential part of his lifestyle and are thus an integral part of his life.
Charles Cassar (died 10 February 2014) was an artist from Valletta.

He was educated at the Lyceum, University of Malta and at the Malta School of Art. In 1964, he placed first in the scholarship exam and was awarded a four-year government grant to further his artistic education abroad. He studied for two years at Croydon College of Art, Surrey, England and for another two years in Italy at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome where he graduated in 1967. He spent 43 years working for the Education Department as teacher, Assistant Head and Head until his retirement in 2005. For a number of years, Charles was a part-time Lecturer in Printmaking at the University of Malta and Lecturer at the School of Art.

During the late sixties he created awareness in graphic design and was a pioneer of computer generated art during the eighties. In 1983 he designed the set of four stamps marking the ‘Commonwealth Day’ and later served on the Stamp Design Advisory Board.

Charles Cassar works incessantly in his studio but travels a lot, visits museums and adores historical archaeological sites. He has nine one-man exhibitions to his credit and participates regularly in collective shows locally and abroad. His works are to be found in private collections worldwide. Cassar has works at the Museum of Fine Art in Valletta, il Museo d’Arte Moderna in Pistoia and La Pinacoteca d’Arte in Locri. Throughout his long artistic career, he has won various competitions, obtained prizes and recognitions from both local and foreign associations. In 2003 he represented Malta in the European Artist Exhibition which was held at the Italian Embassy in Washington DC. His last retrospective exhibition was held at the BOV Centre in Santa Venera in June and July 2009. Cassar’s art is about painting nature’s textures reflected in powerful representations of changing moods. He loves the sea, the rocks, the land and vegetation and all the creatures which dwell in this mysterious human world. His work is an exploration of the self open to the manifested world of reality and life’s journey.
