Artist’s Statement

Over many years I have translated my thoughts into tangible forms, integrating
geometric shapes as a symbolic language within my compositions - thoughts form one’s own theory
of mind. Words on the other hand can sometimes make thoughts even harder to express or
understand.

My main concern however, is to depict the information visually so as to impact the
viewer across age and literacy, and I only hope that my artworks bring a sense of equilibrium
through presence and experience.

With this painting I depict my opinion regarding the future direction of feminism which I believe will
rely and depend on intuition and communication.

Functional 6th chakra energy develops an ability to
see beyond the intellect, beyond the emotion - and dare to dream. And functional 5th chakra energy
dares to speak.

These attributes are prerequisites for future narratives of integrity and for future
agents of change.
Alongside the exhibitions, activities will include a number of Wikipedia editing workshops and edit-a-thons. These activities will further address the gender gap on Wikipedia whilst highlighting the work of women artists and their contribution to the art scene in Malta.

The 2020 edition of this event is part of the Art + Feminism project initiated in Malta in 2018, through a collaboration between Wikimedia Community Malta, Foundation and Spazju Kreattiv.Other collaborators include Unfinished Art Space and the Gabriel Caruana Foundation.

14th February - 8th March 2020

Curated by Margerita Pule

Strangers in a Strange Land is a multidisciplinary exhibition about being female in a world narrated by and designed for men.
Visual and multidisciplinary artists react to the status quo of a male-oriented world, exploring how we can re-design, re-narrate and re-see what is said, and what is valued.
What can a more feminine perspective contribute, and what does a feminine perspective mean in terms of physical, philosophical and societal outlooks?
And does the bilateral depiction of ‘feminine’ and ‘masculine’ exist, or to what extent is it a false construct?

Artists
* Roxman Gatt

Who are we when no one is looking? Are we becoming more than ever alienated from our own sex? Sex appeal has become solely image-based, a curated version for the sake of Instagram, commodifying our bodies into separate body parts and encouraging capitalism to boom more rapidly. This is a solo exhibition by Charlene Galea, supported by the Gabriel Caruana Foundation.

Curator: Raffaella Zammit

Workshop and edit-a-thon
The goal for this Wikipedia editing workshop and Art+Feminism edit-a-thon is to create and edit Wikipedia pages about women artists in Malta, especially ones involved in the associated exhibitions
To celebrate the centenary of her birth and mark the tenth anniversary of her passing, Art+Feminism 2020 includes a special display of some of her works located in Malta in private collections and the Fondazzjoni Kreattività art collection.
