well...here we go!

For these past few weeks, I have been fascinated by how communities of practice work, the idea of on-line cooperation and user-generated content, and how this phenomena of mass collaboration and participatory culture can produce such a wealth of valid material/information.

A good example of this on-line cooperation is perhaps Wikipedia - the online encyclopaedia, where its strength relies solely on its dedicated community of practice for its content and success.

If we can somehow understand how Wikipedia's community of practice work, and discover what motivates it to go on, perhaps we can then apply the findings to assist building and nurturing M3P's own community of practice.

The main aim of M3P is to record/save Malta's music memories, and to do that, there is a need for a strong on-line collaboration. Wikipedia is therefore looked upon as a model for the success of M3P, or better, the successful preservation of Maltese music memories. For starters, M3P runs on the same MediaWiki software as Wikipedia....
Here is some stuff I have been reading
Shirky, C. (2009) Here Comes Everybody: The Power of Organizing Without Organizations. London, Penguin Books.

:The author looks at the internet and explains how it is revolutionising the way we think, organise and communicate in our day-to-day lives and compares this social media revolution to the invention of the printing press, the telephone, the radio and television. He describes the additional challenges faced by many old-school managed organisations such as businesses, governments and religious institutions and warns of “a period of chaos as we re-shift to this new reality.”

Hayek, F.A. (1945) The Use of Knowledge in Society, The American Economic Review, Volume 35, Issue 4 (Sept., 519-530), [online] Available at: http://www.indiapolicy.org/debate/Notes/hayek_low.pdf [Accessed 22 November 2010].

:In his essay, Hayek argues that the sharing of local and personal knowledge, allows individuals to achieve diverse and complicated results through the principle of spontaneous self-organisation. He talks about the perils of centralisation and argues that when information is dispersed, decisions are best left to those with the most local knowledge. The author observes that each person "has some advantage over all others because he possesses unique information of which beneficial use can be made."

Tkacz, N. (2010) Wikipedia and the Politics of Mass Collaboration, PLATFORM: Journal of Media and Communication. [online] Available at: http://www.culture-communication.unimelb.edu.au/platform/resources/includes/vol2_2/PlatformVol2Issue2_Tkacz.pdf [Accessed 27 October 2010].

:In this paper, the author analyses one Wikipedia entry to demonstrate the processes of peer production and how it differs from the “post-political” discourse of collaboration. He argues for a more politicised concept of collaboration.

Vickery, G. & Wunsch-Vincent, S. (2007) Participative web and user-created content: web 2.0, wikis and social networking. Paris, OECD Publications.

:This study looks at the concept of the ‘participating web’ and describes the rapid growth of User-Created Content (UCC) and its increasing role in worldwide communication. This growth in user participation has been achieved and influenced by intelligent web services that empower its users to further collaborate and contribute to its development. While the Internet is becoming increasingly embedded in everyday life with a growing number of people becoming a part of this wider ‘participating web’ by creating and distributing, the authors argue that there is no definite agreement on what constitutes UCC, and measuring the social, cultural and economic impacts of UCC is still in its infancy.

Rheingold, H. (2002) Smart Mobs: The Next Social Revolution. Cambridge MA, Basic Books.

:In this book Rheingold talks about wireless communication devices and how they are shaping modern culture. He interviews people around the world who work and play with their mobile phones, pagers and PDAs to observe how this social revolution is taking shape. This study shows the possibilities and dangers of communications innovation by describing how mobile devices are being used in a variety of ways and in diverse circumstances.
:Chapter two of the book, ‘Technologies of Cooperation’, relates particularly to how people use their mobile devices to interact and cooperate in a virtual social scene. This is of particular interest to my area of research.
Thoughts about building an online community of practise.
Building an online community of practise in a Maltese context:...how would we go about enticing ppl to contribute/write about their stories/memories on their musical experiences, or those of their family, neighbours’, friends?

In Wikipedia…it is reported that from the millions of contributors it claims to have, only about a 1000 of them are considered serious contributors, on tracing back their work. The rest, in the words of Jimmy Wales himself, it would be better for Wikipedia if they could “find another hobby.”!!
What does this imply? And if we are to model M3P on Wikipedia, and therefore compare percentages of the serious contributors from the rest of the millions … with the population of Malta … no, not quiet either ... with that part of the Maltese population that is interested in music and has something to contribute ...then, we would need to work harder to find soldiers for this community of practice. Perhaps there are other ways to do it, that hits/touches more effectively the locals about their music heritage.

WHAT IS A "Community of Practice"?

So, in order to facilitate the nurturing of a "Community of Practice", we must first understand what is meant by the term. Then we can begin to understand how "Communities of Practice” form, work and function.

Etienne Wenger (2006) defines Communities of Practice as "groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do, and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly.”

Even though the phenomenon is age-old, the term "community of practice" is of relatively recent coinage and the concept has provided a useful perspective on knowing and learning.

Some example of communities of practice:
:a group of artists seeking new forms of expression,
:a gathering of first-time managers helping each other to cope.
:a group of pupils defining their identity on their University campus.
:a gang of youth that developed ways of dealing and surviving on the street. While maintain some kind of identity as a group, they also value their collective abilities and learn from each other.

Therefore, forming a group is not enough to constitute a community of practice. Learning can be the reason the community comes together or an incidental outcome of member's interactions.

So, a neighbourhood, although it is often called a community, is usually not a community of practice.

Proposed Questionnaire
This is the questionnaire I have designed using Google forms.
Questionnaire – M3P ...work in progress

Using M3P

The Malta Music Memory Project (M3P) is an open collaborative project that aims to build a comprehensive multimedia database of Maltese music and its associated arts. By doing so, together we will create a national collection of artefacts about all genres of Maltese music.

In the few months that the project started, M3P has prompted a lot of interest from the Maltese music community who sees the importance of this initiative. However, many are still reluctant to contribute to it.

The aim of this survey is to understand why people who have an interest in the Maltese music scene do (or do not) contribute to an open collaborative project such as M3P. We hope this may help us identify ways around barriers to more participation.

This survey should take about 10 min to complete and you can remain anonymous. It consists of a short introduction, followed by two main sections in which we contrast shared perceptions and personal motivation, and a final section where you can tell us more about yourself. At the end of the survey, you will find a link to follow the results and the ensuing conversation.

He's now also aware that you may need a hand with getting the questionnaire organized into an electronic form (via Surverymonkey or Google forms) to make data extration more manageable in the long run. --Toni Sant (talk) 11:11, 31 March 2011 (UTC)
Wikipedia
i have been flicking through Dan O'Sullivan's book, Wikipedia - A New Community of Practice?

Chapter 15 assesses the 3 versions of the page from wikipedia - the great fire of london.

The 3 versions were written in Dec 2002, Dec 2005 and Dec 2008 respectively.
the first thing that struck me was the styles with which the page had gone through...style of written and also the visual style. the first version a simple narrative with internal hyperlinks in place.

the last version (3) stopped being a 'good' read and entered the domain of the academic style of writing! the text became void of emotion, it became clinical

is this wot we invisage M3P to become? i for one, would rather have it accessible to the general public...having said that, i do see an academic purpose to it. perhaps have both versions; condensed version and in-detail version.

: Having considered what you're saying here (and our offline discussion about all this) I've created a subpage for my memories about Artwork. This would be the first person narrative that I (or others) would contribute about the topic before the "academic" or "official" version of the page on Artwork in main namespace gets created. How's this for a possible model on how we do things with the M3P? --Toni Sant (talk) 11:58, 12 December 2010 (UTC)

:: The idea is to get the personal memories of individuals on M3P before they are lost. Writings about musical events that happened any time in the past, from one's point of view and opinion, without getting into discussions who was the best singer or guitarist of that certain year, and what not.

::The contributor will write his memories and thoughts about the music, artists, venues etc he/she had experienced, and it will be totally his/her writings and opinion...and no one changes that entry...if for leaving a comment.

Sharing memories
The main goal of the M3P is to provide an inclusive repository for memories of Malta's music and associated arts, ensuring that these are kept in posterity for current and future generations.

On 28 June 2010 we started exploring the basic information architecture by developing entries related to Xtruppaw.

Initial text for a page about the project was entered on 13 August 2010.

Contribution from the scene started trickling in soon after that and we've also developed a page Exploring Music Genres as a checklist for potential music genres that may be applicable to Maltese Music. Another exploratory list relates to Digital Audio Distributors. Both pages are fully open for contributions from the M3P community.

* Further updates and discussions on the back-end work can be found in the talk page for this Main Page, while some of the more transient work on the front end is listed below...at least for now.

History
The Malta Music Memory Project was launched during Notte Bianca: Lejl Imdawwal in Valletta, Malta on 25th September 2010, with an Inaugural Symposium and Networking Workshop at the St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity. The launch events included an evening concert called You Rarely Hear This On the Radio! at Hastings Garden, overlooking Marsamxett Harbour. This was the first in a series of events planned by M3P for 2010 & 2011.

The M3P Inaugural Conference took place at St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity in Valletta on 3-4 June 2011. A number of evening sessions of live music included the second in a series of M3P events called You Rarely Hear This On the Radio! 2, presented with assistance from the Malta Arts Fund of the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts. Video recordings from these M3P events featuring live music will all be presented on this website in the coming months.

Support for these events was provided by the Malta Arts Fund of the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts and the Strategic Research Support Fund of the University of Hull's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

Academic Research
Academic research is an essential dimension of this project. The collaborative partners on this aspect of M3P are from the University of Hull (led by Dr Toni Sant from the School of Arts & New Media and supported by researchers Alex Grech and Tony Grimaud) and the University of Malta (Dr Ing Saviour Zammit from the Dept. of Communications & Computer Engineering and Dr Albert Bell from Youth & Community Studies). We're also looking into a similar collaboration with Birmingham City University (where our lead contact is Dr Paul Long), particularly with a view to share good practice in community engagement with the Birmingham Popular Music Archives, founded by Jez Collins.

Toni Sant has written a position paper on the academic dimension of the project. This paper appears in the current issue of the Journal of Music, Technology & Education and it is also viewable in the M3P Reading Room.

See also details about the 2011 conference, which place at St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity in Valletta on 3-4 June 2011, and the M3P Inaugural Symposium.

Contributions from the scene
* Pierre Portelli created the M3P logo and after several iterations we settled on the one you see on the site right now. We're hoping to have a page about the history of the logo as one of the project pages in the near future.

* Michael Bugeja has contributed the Lib66 directory of the Malta music scene and his newspaper articles, which are also coming together as a page called Articles by Michael Bugeja under the category Newspaper articles - but this probably needs to be a proper sub-category. Suggestions/comments welcome at Talk:Main Page.

* Wayne Flask is contributing his articles from magazines and newspapers too.

* Dean Muscat is contributing his gig reviews.

* Lito Micallef is looking into ways to integrate the work he has does with live music events at Litorocks.com with the M3P current events section.

* Mario Axiaq is keeping us updated with information about deaths of people that should be recorded on the M3P: Deaths in 2010 - Deaths in 2010

* Toni Sant is contributing updates through his weekly Mużika Mod Ieħor podcast and updating entries for Malta's Top 10.

Year in Review
After 10 years of presenting a review of the preceding year on the Online Network, elements of the same production team started contributing a similar review to the M3P. The 2010 review was the first review made accessible via M3P and contributions to it, and other Year in Review pages are welcome from all registered users in the same spirit as everything else on this website. It is envisioned that reviews of previous years throughout the first decade of the 21th century will be brought to the M3P and archived here accordingly.

Ċentru Ħin Ħieles formerly known as the St.Luke's Garrison Chapel (Church of England), Tigne. Sliema.
This is the actual and historical name of this delightful little chapel which hosted some meetings of the Assoċjazzjoni Sportiva Tigne, cultural events and Rock Concerts (Rokarja AST), in the 1980's and Ballroom Dancing in the early 90's.
The following is a history of this Church that shall celebrate 100 years on the 27th November of this year (2010).

BEGINNING
The need for a place of worship (Church of England) at the area known as Tigne, Sliema was being strongly felt in the beginning of the last century as the community around Tigne and in the Fort Tigne was getting larger and larger.
Plans were made by Lieut-Colonel Hemming, Royal Engineers and a draughtsman Mr.Collins from the Office of the Chief Royal Engineers for the building of a Church to meet the spiritual needs of the large community coming from servicemen and residents.

A CHURCH IS BUILT
The building started when the then Governor of Malta, Sir Leslie Rundle laid the first foundation stone on the 16th of January 1910. The Church was built and was open for service some months later on Advent Sunday 27th November of the same year. The dedication was by the bishop of Gibraltar, the Right Reverend William Edward Collins.
The first religious service was officiated to the congregation with the Governor of Malta, Sir Leslie Rundle, present.
The Church was paid for by private and public donations.
Entrance to the Church was three doors situated on the North, West and South sides of the Church, surrounded by a splendid garden and railings.
Now this Church could offer full service to the military personal and the surrounding areas as it was planned to host 400 worshippers.
The first Chaplin to serve inside the Church was Reverend Douglas Percy.

FEATURES AND ADDITIONS
Inside the Church one could find a chancel, two aisles, nave, an organ site and vestry. The focal point of the stone altar was a triple chancel with Corinthian capitalised style pillars, artistically carved by Corporal Sheppard R.E., forming three panels. A stone altar rail decorated with Maltese crosses with the chancel floor finished off with red tiles and white marble steps.
It was a small but a beautiful Church tastefully designed for all worshippers which included the wealthy Hughes-Hallet family as they used to live in the Tigne area. Now, one can find a street in Tigne, named after the Hughes-Hallets.
The bell tower, west porch and roof decorations were completed a bit later.
In March of the following year a stone memorial pulpit was erected in memory of the service personnel who died in Malta. This was a gift from the NCOs’ and men of the 65 Company, Royal Artillery.
In September of the same year, an organ was added to the St. Luke’s Garrison Church. This organ was made by the Positive Organ Company of London. The whole assembly of this organ was under the hands of Staff Sergeant Thomas of the Royal Naval Engineers.
Further additions to the Church were a font-in memory of John Henry Locke Jones who died on 17th May 1912 (provided by Captain H.H.H. Jones) and a large brass 24” cross presented to the Church in memory of Colonel H.T. Hughes Hallett.

FURTHER ADDITIONS
The Hughes Hallet family were to provide another addition to this Church. It was recorded in 1929, that a beautiful set of silver Communion vessels (a chalice and a paten) were presented in memory of Miss Mary Francis Hughes Hallett-who was very much interested in the total welfare of the Tigne Garrison. As a reciprocal memento in honour of this very generous lady, a brass memorial cross was erected that stood together with the same patterned cross in memory of her two brothers, the Admiral and the Colonel Hughes Hallet.
Another cross was presented to the Church in memory of a hero, the 21 year old Gunner Sydney Ernest Picton who jumped into the sea and tried in vain to save a lady who fell into it in the Qui-Si-Sana area.. This cross was given to the Church by his comrade of the Royal Artillery.

CHANGES, ACTIVITIES AND WORLD WAR II
The strong wintery ice cold North East Gregale (referred to the Greek island of Zakynthos) was causing discomfort for the congregation in 1931 and it was decided to erect a porch in order to lessen this nasty and dangerous Mediterranean wind. Together with this porch, the old chairs were replaced by new pews. Payment for this came from donations by the congregation.
By 1936, this Church became a hub of activities with the Sunday Schools,
The Mothers Union and other groups. It also became a point of respite and help for the distressed and distraught.
In World War 11, the St.Luke’s Garrison Church was hit badly and was declared unsafe, so the congregation had to attended the Holy Trinity Church in Rudolph Street, Sliema for divine worship.
Plans were made by Lieut-Colonel Hemming, Royal Engineers and a draughtsman Mr.Collins from the Office of the Chief Royal Engineers for the building of a Church to meet the spiritual needs of the large community coming from servicemen and residents.

CHANGES, ACTIVITIES AND WORLD WAR 11

Ċentru Ħin Ħieles formerly known as the St.Luke's Garrison Chapel (Church of England), Tigne. Sliema.
This is the actual and historical name of this delightful little chapel which hosted some meetings of the Assoċjazzjoni Sportiva Tigne, cultural events and Rock Concerts, in the 1980's and Ballroom Dancing in the early 90's.

Proposed strategies for cultivating online collaboration.

Choosing a user-friendly interface that invites and make it easy for users to contribute and take an active part in the project. Although it is great for online collaborative projects, Media wiki is not the easiest platform to work on. Many potential contributors are afraid of editing in fear of 'messing up' what is already there.

Get the message out: Give a clear explanation what the project is all about: i.e. preserving cultural memories in connection with the local music scene. Invite people to collaborate and contribute towards the archive in their preferred area of music.

Training: Facilitate by create easy to follow instructions how to use the tools used by the group for collaborate, ie MediaWiki, Facebook. Introduce other tools that would help them capture and/or digitise the media as best (ie highest resolution) as possible. Organise instruction on how to use such software and hardware. Organise a scheme by which such specialised hardware could be made available to the groups. This may require funding to purchase such equipment. Other skills to consider for successful online collaboration are planning and negotiation skills, ethical considerations and guidelines for behaviour when dealing with their peer collaborators and other contributors (copyright issues, proper handling of memorabilia).

Identify leaders of existing groups that are already making an effort to preserve or keeping alive their preferred music genre by encourage them to continue doing so and offer (not impose on) the support. Show them that there are other/better ways to doing things and let them know that assistance is at hand if they wish to make use of it (assistance as in making available equipment to digitise mediated memories, and also instruction on ways to improve their skills in doing such a task.

Organise ‘travelling exhibitions’ (say: in collaboration with Local Councils) and invite the locals to come over and add to the information presented. Special space created during the exhibition (with a camera and/or microphone) where visitors are encouraged to talk about their past experiences of the local music, venues they frequented, bands/musicians/artists they followed in their youth, the fashion, the songs, the drinks they had in such venues, the entrance fees, tickets, posters, days and times of the concerts, etc. (Oral histories)

Interview prominent people in the music scene. Organise formal or informal meetings. These could be private or public meetings. Try to accommodate especially if the subject is a veteran. Set up and record the session. (Oral histories)

M3P: Improve the interface making it more user-friendly and inviting. The strength of M3P lies in the fact that all data stored is on a University server and therefore immune to any business deals that would one day loose its data, as happened to Geocities and ight one day happen to Facebook or Myspace.

Funding: Many of the strategies proposed above require funding in order to succeed. Public funding is available to apply for from government and EU entities. However, such funds have to be used wisely.

People tend to collaborate more when their efforts are remunerated. One should stay away from giving/suggesting false hopes of renumeration in any way for their effort of collaboration.

Proposed strategies for cultivating online collaboration.
