Ettore Castagna played the Maltese lira at the Għanafest in Floriana on 8th June 2013, following academic research by Ruben Zahra. The folk instrument, which was last documented in Malta in the 19th century, was reconstructed by Pietro Forlani, and is a three stringed instrument without a fingerboard or frets. It is also popular in Calabria and in Crete.
